AI (artificial intelligence) has been all anyone can talk about ever since pop culture medias like “I, Robot” predicted it would eventually turn on and eliminate the human race. Unfortunately for apocalypse geeks, that day has yet to come, but AI is rapidly evolving every day.
Just recently in an August 19 article from KPMG.com, a survey revealed that about half of the Gen Z population believes AI will take over 20% of the jobs currently available in the workforce. However, 92% of the group is confident they can adapt to whatever AI has to throw at them.
Humane Tech’s module one goes into depth on the use of AI and specifically deepfakes, which uses a person’s likeness to imitate them. On slide 15, the module shows an example of a group of world leaders in AI form singing “Imagine” by John Lennon, going to prove how wild AI can be, but also frightening. The appearances of the world leaders, including Barack Obama, Justin Trudeau and Vladimir Putin are almost identical to what they would be if they were truly singing and moving their mouths.
On slide 14 of the module, it even shows examples of how AI can be used to fake disasters. The slide shows a picture of an AI explosion in a war zone with a misleading headline. Especially in the midst of a war-time setting, this could be extremely harmful as someone may think the attack was real, and real life war could break out.
The module goes on to explain that these things that AI can help us with may be great, but we have to be AWARE of the dangers, not afraid of them. It teaches a good lesson — to be sure what you see on the internet is real and authentic. There’s a lot of fake stuff out there that gets pedaled all over the internet. Trust is lost in sources and in media when large-scale AI errors happen. In order to keep the trust, everyone has to do their part to make sure what they see is real.
